With this in mind, his seed merchant Jonathan Payne of Nickerson Seeds advised him to try the soft wheat LG Skyscraper three years ago.
LG Skyscraper joined the AHDB Recommended List in 2019 as the highest yielding Group 4 wheat. Positioned as a very consistent and versatile performer across regions and seasons by breeders Limagrain UK, its high yielding performance is backed up with excellent disease resistance, good on farm agronomics such as early maturity, OWBM resistance and a good bold grain quality with a high specific weight.
Since then LG Skyscraper has proven itself season in and season out – holding onto its poll position on the RL for three very different seasons and delivering on quality.
“We wanted a variety that would give us the yields we wanted – we aim for about 10t/ha from our wheats and have always looked to get these yields from hard wheats. LG Skyscraper was interesting as it gave us these yields but also the added bonus of a soft milling premium,” says Paul.
“The LG Skyscraper goes in at a pretty standard seed rate of 190kg/ha and we find it tillers better than most other varieties, covering the ground pretty quickly.”
“We haven’t had any issues with disease, its pretty clean, but we do keep an eye on the length of the straw and make sure that its gets a good PGR programme.”
Inputs are fairly standard at Five Acre Farm. “We would normally use granular nitrogen, but this year taking into account the issues with supply and price, we are going to trial a liquid nitrogen product, Nutrino which will go on with the fungicide sprays.”
“There’s no reason for us to go away from growing LG Skyscraper, it yields year in and out, with the option of a soft milling premium, is clean, has a good bushel weight and cuts easily – so what’s not to like?”
