Limagrain is ranked No.1 in Europe for wheat and silage maize, No.2 for barley and forage crops and No.3 for sunflower and rapeseed. The company sells cereals and pulses under the LG or Nickerson brand and maize, sunflower, rapeseed and forage crops under the brand of Advanta® or LG, depending on the country.
The UK Wheat breeding station is located at Woolpit near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk and is involved in the selection, testing and early stage seed production of cereal varieties for the UK market. As the area is not served well by public transport your own transport would be beneficial.
To assist the wheat breeding team with harvest and sowing, working alongside both permanent and temporary staff, activities vary but will include:
- Plant pulling to remove “off types” within multiplication plots
- Hand harvesting of selected plants and rows
- Threshing plants and cleaning seed of selected lines
- Assistance with combine plot harvest
- Weighing and recording plot weights
- Weighing and sampling seed for analysis and replanting
Due to the varied nature of these activities it will involve working outside in all conditions and at times be physically demanding. Appropriate protective equipment is routinely provided when working in either dusty and/or noisy environments.
