Vitaro

White Mustard

  • Target: Improved Soil Structure & Nematode Control
  • Scheme: None
  • Area: Cover Crop
  • Sowing period: Summer/Autumn

Vitaro mustard has been specifically bred to have a high level of nematode resistance.

It has a leafy growth habit and can be easily incorporated into the soil. Vitaro can produce a tap root of up to 1.5 metres in length which can help reduce compaction and improve drainage. Vitaro also exhibits late flowering and good early vigour.

Vitaro is very fast growing, even at lower temperatures and therefore can be sown later if required. Vitaro can also help reduce Rhizoctonia (a fungal disease of root vegetable and beet species).

Zlata is very fast growing, even at lower temperatures and therefore can be sown later if required.

+ Heterodera schachtii – Nematode Resistant Level 2

+ Heterodera betea

Vitaro is a non-host to

+ Potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis & G. Pallida)

+ Cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae)

+ Carrot cyst nematode (Heterodera goettingiana)

+ Grass root knot nematode (Meloidogyne naasi)

+ Destructor nematode (Ditylenchus destructor)

Strengths

  • Fast growing, even at lower temperatures

  • High level of nematode resistance

  • Good early vigour
